Mariposa City and County

Mariposa, is the Spanish name for butterfly. In 1850 it occupied more that one fifth of the entire state of California. It provides access to Yosemite following along the Merced River.

Mariposa offers a wide variety of lodging, dining, antique shopping, wineries, golf courses and an abundance of recreational opportunities.

Mariposa, the Spanish name for butterfly, is home to the county fairgrounds and the California State Mining and Mineral Museum.

The town of Mariposa has several galleries, shops and restaurants. The Museum and History center presents an authentic picture of people and life in Mariposa County. Information about the logging industry, mining and the early Miwok Indian tribe is provided.

Mariposa is also the gateway to Yosemite Valley. Highway 140 is the only year-around access, and follows the beautiful Merced River for much of the route.
